History of the Piano

Welcome to the 'History of the Piano' Page!

The early history of the piano began with an idea which, over the course of a few decades, was subjected to a string of eccentric modifications - all variations on a theme of improving performance. Some of these refinements contributed little to the shaping of the modern piano, but others seem to have captured the imagination, outlining a possible route through to the promise of buried treasure yet to be discovered. The great quest for constant progress was thus inspired.

Here, on the History of the Piano Page, we aim to map the progress from the early possibilities, towards the point at which the concept had become, to a large extent, a reality. Inevitably, we are looking at some of the people who grappled with the challenges of creating a new instrument. While others were more interested to make piano-building a profitable business - weighing up the costs of a high quality product versus the ability to sell them.

You are invited on this little 'treasure hunt'. We are looking for that enchanted 'X-marks-the-spot' place of musical bliss: The Piano!
